In Loving Memory of Prof. Anthony Reid

Anthony Reid was an Indonesianist known for his close ties with the Indonesian community in Australia.

Throughout his life, Tony Reid reshaped the history of Southeast Asia by centering ordinary people within broad economic, cultural, and political narratives.

His works received both academic and public recognition, as well as high honors from institutions in Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Indonesia.

A Legacy for Indonesia

Anthony Reid reshaped Indonesia’s understanding of its past by:

a. Mapping the multiethnic, maritime, and cosmopolitan contours of its history,

b. Restoring regional and local agency within nationalist narratives,

c. Strengthening academic confidence in the use of colonial archives and interdisciplinary approaches,

d. Advocating for institutional support for Indonesian studies in the region.

His work also serves as a cautionary mirror for contemporary Indonesia, highlighting how neglecting complexity and marginal voices undermines historical justice and democratic resilience.

Thank you, Anthony Reid. Rest in peace.
